Reason #1 to Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program: It Starts Today!!! Come in or go online to sign up and start reading to earn prizes.

It’s here!  It’s here!  It’s finally here!!  It’s the first day of the Summer Reading Program!  The library opens at 10 a.m. today.  Come in and be one of the first to sign up for the Summer Reading Program.  Can’t make it?  You can sign up online this year and print your reading log.  This is an excellent opportunity to read and earn prizes for free, and we hope you will sign up soon!

Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers can participate in our Rubber Ducky Reading Club and earn an adorable rubber ducky and a brand new board book for completing important literacy activities with their parents or caregivers, like sharing a book, singing a song, or saying a nursery rhyme.  After completing 12 activities, little ones will be entered into our Grand Prize Drawing for a basket full of brand new books!

Kids in grades K – 5 will have a chance to earn book bucks to buy items from our book store for FREE, a gold medal, and a chance to win a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card in our Dream Big, READ! program.

Teens who sign up for our Own the Night program will be awarded book bucks, a cool magnetic book mark, and a chance to win a Sony Wi-Fi eReader.

Reason #2 to Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program: There are SO Many Amazing Books to Read This Summer and So Many Ways to Enjoy Them!

Summer vacation is the perfect opportunity to catch up on reading all the amazing books there are to read, and there are so many different ways to enjoy books!  Not a great reader?  No problem!  Did you know that the best way to improve your reading is to…read?  Simply practicing your reading for 20 minutes a day can make you a better reader by the end of the summer.

Being read to by someone else is also a great way to enjoy books.  You can count those bedtime stories that someone reads to you as part of your 20 minute goal each day.  Teens, you can read to younger brothers and sisters for 20 minutes per day, and you’ll all earn prizes for it!

Going on a long car trip?  Check out a CD audiobook to listen to on the way!  Try the Harry Potter series read by master narrator Jim Dale.

Reason #3 to Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program: The Library Has Lots of Exciting Programs This Summer!

Can’t make it to the library on June 1 to sign up but want to get your reading log right away?  For the first time ever, you can sign up for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Summer Reading Program online and print your reading log all without leaving home!  Just visit http://www.lvccld.org/events/special_programs/srp/, choose the program you’d like to sign up for, enter your library card number, and get started on your reading.  You could earn your first Book Buck on Sunday, June 10 and be well on your way to winning even more fabulous prizes!   The Summer Reading Program goes from June 1 – July 31.  Call 507-4015 for more information.

Reason #5 to Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program: It’s FREE!

Looking to save money on summer entertainment?  Look no further!  The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Summer Reading Program is completely FREE.  Plus, with your free library card, you can check out up to 50 items, including books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, comic books, and more.  That will keep you busy without emptying your piggy bank.  Don’t have a library card yet?  If you’re under 18, all you need is a parent or guardian with a picture ID to come to the library with you.  Our wonderful Customer Service staff will sign you up for your free card in just minutes, and you’ll be ready to check out all the materials you’ll need for summer fun.

The many benefits of reading are astounding: better grades, improved vocabulary, increased knowledge, etc.  Reading is definitely worthwhile, but kids are often told what to read, when to read it, and sometimes even what to think about it, and this can make reading more of a chore than an enjoyable leisure activity.  The Summer Reading Program is the perfect opportunity to put the FUN back in reading by giving kids the opportunity to read whatever they want and earn prizes for doing so!  Read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.  Read Dork Diaries, Day by Day with Justin Bieber, or Do People Really Have Tiny Insects Living in Their Eyelashes?.  Read magazines.  Read comic books.  Read the back of your cereal box.  Listen to an audiobook while you’re sprawled out by the pool.  Just please, whatever you do this summer, READ!
