This is generally a busy time of the year for just about everyone. But for the committee members of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), it must be extremely hectic. YALSA has recently announced the finalists for their 2013 Excellence in Nonfiction Award and the William C. Morris Debut Award for first time authors of teen books. Book covers and descriptions of the five nonfiction finalists can be found here and the five Morris award nominees can be found here. Winners won’t be announced until January 28, so intrepid readers can choose a list to read through, pick their own favorite and then, come January, see if the YALSA committee members agree!
The Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature will also be announced at the end of January and while there is no shortlist of finalists to make the reading easier, there are definitely titles that are being discussed as potential Printz candidates due to their outstanding reviews and the amount of love generated by devoted bloggers. Yes, none of that has anything to do with how the Printz committee will ultimately choose their winner, but one can’t help but assume seasoned readers will be drawn to the cream of the crop. The good folks over at School Library Journal host a blog called “Someday my Printz Will Come” where expert librarians Karyn Silverman, Sarah Couri and Sophie Brookover read, review and discuss the merits of eligible 2013 young adult novels before voting down to a short list of favorites. So, how many have you read already?
The lists are all impressive and whether these books win any medals or not, they certainly represent the best of the year. So, looking for something to read? Have I got a list for you. . . .
